The open hoop
How it is worn.
One piece, front to back: the top sits in front, the wire curves under the lobe, and there is no separate back.
To put it on
- Hold it by the top.
- Put the end of the curve into your piercing from the front, and ease the wire through until the top sits against the front of your lobe.
- Turn the top so the curve swings down behind your lobe and comes forward under it.
- Check it from the side in a mirror: the top sits in front, the curve sits under the lobe.
True size
Top and drop, in millimeters.
Two numbers describe an open hoop. The top is the width of the piece that sits in front of the lobe. The drop is the distance from the piercing to the bottom of the curve.
Where the hoop sits depends on how far your piercing is from the edge of the lobe. The size guide shows how to measure it.
Once our calipers have measured the samples, every size in this issue sits beside its fraction of a dime. A dime is 17.91 mm across.

Clear
One clear top on each: a round or a teardrop. Each page names the material once its maker states it in writing.
Charm
Small shapes: hearts, a crescent, a bow. Shapes only, no meanings.
Cluster
Clear tops set together as one.
Color
One colored top on each. The colors are names for colors, nothing more.
Huggies
The closure is built into the hoop.
